Berkeley, Calif.-- The San Jose State women's gymnastics team opened the 2017 season with two top-five finishes individually at the NorCal Classic in at Haas Pavilion Monday evening. The Spartans finished the meet with a 192.600 team score.
Kaitlin Won led all Spartan finishers as she tied for third on floor with a 9.825. She was also fourth in the all-around with a 38.600. Rachel Heinl tied her career best on bars with a 9.850 to tie for fifth place.
The Spartans started the 2017 season on the floor where the team scored a 48.675. Josalyn Ray led off the team with a 9.725, followed by the debut of Chelsea Andrada with a 9.550, Erica Matos at 9.575, Ellie Pascoe-Long at 9.775, Won at 9.825 and Taylor Chan her made her Spartan debut with a 9.775.
The vault team scored a 48.700 to give San Jose State a 97.375 after two rotations. Won again led the team with a 9.800, followed by Chan at 9.775, Ray at 9.725, Kendal Watts with a 9.725, Heinl at 9.675 and Leah Perrino making her Spartan debut with a 9.625.
After a bye, the Spartans moved to bars and scored the team's best score of the night at 48.750. Heinl tied her career-best with a 9.850 to lead the Spartans. Won added a 9.800, followed by Stephanie Relova with a career-best 9.750, Watts with a career-high 9.700, Haleigh Shepard at 9.650 and Kaprece Nadonza at 9.150.
Beam in the final rotation was not kind to the Spartans as the team had four falls in the team's 46.425. Andrada led the team with a 9.600, followed by Chan at 9.575 then Won at 9.175,Relova at 9.125, Alisa Bogdan at 8.950 and Watts at 8.800.
"We started off really strong tonight," said Spartan head coach Wayne Wright. "We have to learn how to finish, especially on beam. I am really proud of everyone who did well tonight. We have potential and can only go up."
San Jose State competes this Friday at Sacramento State. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
