Stanford, Calif.-- Four of the five San José State women's golfers are in the top-20 after the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course. The Spartans finished the day shooting 294 and are in fourth place.
My Leander led the Spartans with an even-par 71, and is tied for third place. She started her round by making 11 consecutive pars (holes 10-18, 1 &2) before making back-to-back birdies on #3 and #4. After back-to back bogeys, Leander finished the round par-birdie-bogey. She was the best player on the par-three holes as she was three under for the day.
Elizabeth Schultz is tied for 12th at 73. Starting her round on #13, she also started the day by making eight consecutive pars. After bogeys on three of her next four holes, Schultz rebounded over her last six holes with five pars and a birdie on #8.
Abegail Arevalo and Alexandra Cooper at tied for 20th as both shot a 75. Arevalo, starting on #12, was one-over par through her first seven holes, making a birdie on #15, four pars and two bogeys. She shot an even-par 35 over the front nine, making three birdies, three bogeys and three pars. Arevalo finished the round with a double bogey on #10 and a bogey on #11.
Cooper started her round with a birdie on #12, and made two bogeys and two pars to be one-over after seven holes. She finished the day with 12 pars made, five bogeys and birdie.
Franziska Friedrich rounded out the Spartan scoring with an 80 and is tied for 55th. She made 10 pars during her round but did not card a birdie on Saturday.
San José State finished the day in fourth place at 294, eight shots behind host and number-one ranked Stanford. The Spartans are just two shots from Oregon in second place and Colorado who is just one shot ahead. There is a three-shot separation between fourth and fifth place as Stanford "B" team shot a 297. Mountain West foe Nevada is sixth after shooting a 299.
"We drove the ball pretty well today, which is essential in these conditions," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We need to do a better job of taking advantage of the par 5s tomorrow."
The Spartans begin the final round on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The team will play with Nevada and Stanford "B" on holes 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
