Gauvain & Klocker In Doubles Are Winners At Stanford; Spartans Lose, 7-0

Feb. 14, 2017

Stanford, Calif.---- San Jose State University's #1 women's doubles team of Sybille Gauvain and Marie Klocker won their match, but Stanford's overall team strength propelled the Cardinal to a 7-0 non-conference over the Spartans.

Gauvain and Klocker made it three in a row in dual-match action with a 6-0 win over Stanford's Emily Arbuthnott and Taylor Davidson. Their win also is the first time since the 2015 Pac-12 Championships that a Stanford doubles team was shutout in a match.

"We took it to them at #1 (with Gauvain and Klocker). They played extremely well today," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka about the Spartans' highlight of the day.

The #4-ranked Cardinal bounced back and took the 1-0 lead in the team scoring with wins at #2 and #3 doubles. Stanford, the 2016 NCAA team champion, then won the six singles matches each in straight sets.

"Stanford plays a very aggressive style. They're very consistent. They attack every short ball. And, it showed. Sybille at #1 (singles) had a nice battle today. She had a deuce point to get it to 6-6 all and force a tiebreaker. Unfortunately, she came up on the short end and lost the first set and the second," the Spartans coach said about Gauvain's singles match, in particular, and Stanford's approach to singles play with three nationally-ranked players in the lineup.

"It was a great opportunity to play this team and we look forward to playing them next year at home," Skorupka said about the first dual match between these teams since 1988.

"We saw some stuff we need to work on. We hope it doesn't rain and we can play our home opener on Friday."

San Jose State (2-3) returns to action, weather-permitting, Friday, February 17, in its home opener vs. Academy of Art University at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club in San Jose. First serve is at Noon.
