San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball team trailed 38-22 with 8:01 to play in the third period and then put on a furious comeback to tie the game 60-60 and send it into overtime. In the extra period they pulled away for a 77-68 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs on Wednesday night.
The 16-point comeback is the biggest, in a winning effort, by SJSU this season and the third time the team has won a game after trailing by double digits in 2016-17.
The Spartans had four players in double figures led by the Mountain West's leading scorer Dezz Ramos. Ramos had 27 points and eight assists. Jasmine Smith picked up her sixth double double in conference play, 14 points and 13 rebounds. Paris Baird scored 13 points and had four steals and Myzhanique Ladd added 10 points and six rebounds.
In the first half, Fresno State outshot the Spartans 46-to-33 percent and took a 33-22 lead into intermission. The Bulldogs grabbed the lead midway though the first quarter on a layup by the team's leading scorer Bego Faz Davalos and maintained it through the first 20 minutes.
Coming out of the locker room, Fresno State hit the first five points of the third period to get the advantage to 38-22, but SJSU head coach called a 30-second time out and that is when things started to turnaround.
The Spartans (9-16, 6-7 MW) hit three-pointers on five of its next seven possessions to cut the Bulldogs lead in half 42-34 and it was still eight points, 47-39 heading to the fourth.
After a Candice White three-pointer gave Fresno a 53-43 lead with 8:24 to go in the period, the Spartans outscored the Bulldogs 15-5 over the next seven minutes. Smith had a pair of free throws and a layup, Baird hit a jumper and Ramos scored nine, including a three with 1:31 to go to tie the game at 58-58.
Fresno State (14-11, 7-7 MW) look the lead back with 1:02 left on a layup by Tory Jacobs and with 44 seconds remaining Smith hit a layup to tie it again at 60-60. Ladd grabbed a rebound off a Fresno State miss with 22 seconds left and Ramos missed a jumper from the baseline as time expired which sent the game to overtime.
Baird hit a three to open overtime and the Spartans never looked back. Ramos had nine of the team's 17 points in the extra period, including going 6-of-8 from the line. Ladd was 3-of-3 from the stripe and also hit a bucket.
The Spartans out rebounded the Bulldogs 37-to-34 and played superior defense in the post. Davalos, who scored 20 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in the team's matchup earlier this year in Fresno, scored 13 in the first half, but was limited to just five points in the second and led her team with nine boards. Three other Bulldogs scored in double figures in the losing effort.
SJSU goes on the road for its next game, at Air Force on Saturday.
