Colorado Springs, Colo. - Dezz Ramos scored 17 of her game-high 34 points in the fourth quarter, including going 4-of-5 from three point range, as the San José State women's basketball team pulled away from the Air Force Falcons in an 83-67 victory on Saturday afternoon in Clune Arena.
The win is the team's third straight on the road, the 100th of Head Coach Jamie Craighead's career and her 49th in three-plus seasons leading the Spartans. Craighead's 49 wins at San José State tie her with Karen Smith (1993-99) for third most in program history.
In addition to her seventh 30+-point game of the season, Ramos grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists. Myzhanique Ladd equaled her season high with 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in her third double double of the year and her career. Taylor Turney was an efficient 6-of-9 from the floor and scored a career-best 16 points while Paris Baird got a game-high 16 boards and chipped in eight points.
San Jose State (10-16, 7-7 MW) trailed 7-6 with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter, but a Ladd layup put the SJSU ahead 8-7. An 11-4 run in the last two minutes, sparked by a Hallie Gennett jumper and three-pointer in back-to-back possessions had the Spartans up 19-11 after 10 minutes.
In the first 30 seconds of the second period, Air Force (3-21, 1-13 MW) got the SJSU lead down to six points on a pair of Dee Bennett free throws, but with 2:17 to go before intermission a Turney three-point play gave the Spartans their biggest lead of the half 33-21. The Falcons, however, battled back and had the deficit down to seven by halftime, 35-28.
Cortney Porter, who led the Falcons with 20 points and 13 rebounds, hit a layup with 2:03 to go in the third to tie the game 46-46. Ladd responded with a layup on SJSU's next possession and Ramos drained a three-pointer with 1:10 to go to give the Spartans a 51-46 lead. Ladd then scored four of San José State's final six points in the period and the team had a 57-50 advantage going into the final period.
The fourth quarter belonged to Ramos and the Spartans. The team hit 9-of-15 shots (60 percent) from the floor, drained 4-of-7 threes and sank all four free throw attempts. Ramos was 5-of-7 from the field, 4-of-5 from long range and hit 3-of-3 from the line scoring 17 of the team's 26 points in the period.
With the Falcons down 65-61 and 5:33 to play, Ramos had a three-point play and then sank back-to-back threes to push the advantage to 11 points. The lead was still 11 with 2:24 to play when Ramos finished Air Force off with her last three-pointer and a pair of free throws for the 83-67 victory.
SJSU shot 43.7 percent from the floor (31-of-71), the second game in a row at better than 40 percent. The made 9-of-22 threes (40.9 percent) and sank 12-of-14 free throws (85.7 percent). They outscored the Falcons 40-to-32 in the paint, 17-to-9 on points off turnovers and their bench had a 21-to-7 advantage.
San José State remains on the road for their next game. The team will be in Logan, Utah on Wednesday, February 22 to play Utah State. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (MT).
