LOS ANGELES - The San Jose State baseball team was held to one hit while the pitching staff walked seven and hit five batters as the Spartans lost 10-1 to UCLA on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans (0-2) offense could not get anything going against Bruins starter Jake Bird, who retired the first 12 batters he faced and did not allow a hit, a double by Chris Williams (1-3, double), until the seventh inning. He walked three and struck out six in 7.0 innings of work.
SJSU starter Matt Brown (0-1) struggled with his control, hitting four and walking three in 4 1/3 innings. Despite his control issues, the Spartans were only down 2-0 heading into the fifth.
In the fifth, the Bruins (2-0) sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on three hits, two walks and two hit batters against Brown and relievers Jackson Cunningham and Josh Goldberg.
Along with Jackson Cunningham, fellow freshman Jeremy Polon and junior college transfer Cameron Keup made their Spartan debuts.
Senior Zach Tanner with his new submarine motion pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning.
The Spartans will try to salvage the series finale on Monday at 1:00 p.m. LHP Graham Gomez gets the ball for the Spartans, while the Bruins send RHP Jon Olsen to the mound.
