Taylor Chan & Brandon Clarke Are January Student-Athletes Of The Month

Feb. 2, 2017

Freshman gymnast Taylor Chan and sophomore men's basketball player Brandon Clarke are the Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes of the month for January, presented by O'Connor Hospital.

Chan made a splash in the first month of her collegiate career by tying for first place on vault with a 9.775 at a dual meet against Sacramento State, and then winning the floor event outright with a 9.850 at the Metroplex Challenge. Chan was the top floor performer in the MPSF leading to a pair of Freshman Women's Gymnast of the Week awards. She hasn't scored less than a 9.775 on her floor routine in four meets, while also recording a 9.775 on vault in three of the team's four meets.

Clarke was an absolute monster averaging 24.0 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in eight games during January. He scored 20 or more points in six out of the eight contests, highlighted by his career-high 36 points in the Spartans' 89-85 victory on the road at Air Force. Earlier that week he put in 25 points in 26 minutes on the road at San Diego State, and was named Mountain West Player of the Week for the second time this season following those outings. Clarke enters the month of February as the Mountain West's leading scorer during league play averaging 23.3 points per game.
