Comeback Falls Short At Utah State

Feb. 22, 2017

Final Stats

Logan, Utah - The San José State women's basketball team trailed by 22 points late in the second quarter, but battled all the way back to take a two-point lead with 5:30 to play before finally coming up short in an 82-78 defeat at the hands of the Utah State Aggies on Wednesday night. The loss snapped the team's three-game road win streak.

Dezz Ramos led the Spartans with her eighth 30+-point effort of the season. She finished with 37 points, five rebounds and five assists. Against the Aggies, she passed Brittany Johnson's previous single-season scoring record of 603 which was set in 2011-12. Ramos' new record is 624 points and she has at least four more games in her Spartans'career.

Paris Baird picked up her third double double in the last six games with 14 points and 13 rebounds and she blocked two shots. Myzhanique Ladd chipped in 10 points, nine boards and four assists.

The Aggies owned the first 20 minutes and the Spartans the second 20, but Utah State (15-12, 8-8 MW) dominated the paint and the boards all night. With Jasmine Smith out for the second game in a row, after being the victim of a flagrant foul in the team's victory over Fresno State, the Aggies used their height advantage to outrebound San José State 52-39, including 17-9 on the offensive glass.

USU's eight-rebound advantage on the offensive end turned into a 20-to-8 advantage in second chance points. Overall, Utah State dominated inside outscoring the Spartans 44-6 in the paint.

While the Aggies were racking up points inside, San José State (10-17, 7-8 MW) was taking and making threes. SJSU made a total of 12, its third highest total of the season, to Utah State's four and the threes were the key in the team's comeback.

Down 22 with 3:33 to go before intermission, Ramos hit a three. Then with 1:42 to go and the Spartans still down 18, Analyss Benally got into the action with a trey to cut the lead to 15. After a Utah State layup, Ramos came back and drained another triple, but SJSU still trailed 49-33 at the half.

In the third quarter Baird made two three pointers, each time trimming the Utah State lead to 11, but the team could not get the lead down to single digits and trailed 61-51 heading to the fourth.

The first half of the final period was vintage Spartans. Ladd drained a three from the corner to get the lead to seven on the first possession of the quarter. The next time down the floor Baird knocked down a three to make it a four-point game.

With 6:45 to play Baird sank a three from four feet beyond the arc trimming the deficit to a single point. Utah State made a layup on the other end, but Ramos came back with the team's fourth three-pointer of the period to tie the game 65-65.

Ladd made a layup on the next Spartans possession and SJSU was in front 67-65 with 5:30 to go.

A pair of free throws from Hailey Bassett, two of her 16 points on the night, gave the lead back to the Aggies 69-67 inside four minutes to play.

Down the stretch, Utah State would hit all six of its free throw attempts, while the Spartans would miss on half of their six and SJSU came up with empty possessions on 7-of-10 possessions in the last 3:30.

Despite that, an Andrea Kohlhaas three made it a five-point game with 41 seconds left and 10 second later Taylor Turney had a conventional three-point play to make the score 79-75.

In the last 22 seconds, Ramos made the Spartans 12th and final three-pointers of the game, but Utah State sank three free throws for the final margin of 82-78

The Spartans return to The Event Center for their next game. SJSU hosts the Boise State Broncos at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. It will be Alumni Day, with the program welcoming back its former players.
