Phoenix, Ariz. - The San José State softball team gave up five runs in the bottom of the first and never recovered in an 8-0, five-inning loss to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes in the first game of the GCU Invitational.
SJSU (5-6), which committed two errors through the first 10 games of the season, had three in the first three innings against Grand Canyon (11-1).
Colette Riggs (1-2) got through the first inning, but gave up three hits, a walk, and the Spartans committed an error, all of which lead to five runs.
Kacie Gresenz came on in the second and pitched the rest of the way for SJSU. Gresenz surrendered five hits, two walks, a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, which ended the game.
The Spartans were able to get just three hits against GCU starter Taylor Nowlin, who tossed five innings and improved to 8-1 with the win. Georgia Blair, Casey Watt and Emma Entzminger got the team's three hits, all singles.
The Spartans continue play in the GCU Invitational on Friday with games against Rhode Island and Portland State.
