Women's Tennis Wins Home Opener, 5-2, Over USF

Feb. 23, 2017

San Jose, Calif.----- Marine Dans, Tamara Culibrk and Miyo Kobayashi each won for San Jose State University in singles and were part of a doubles victory as the Spartans defeated the University of San Francisco, 5-2, in a non-conference women's tennis match.

Dans clinched the win for San Jose State (3-3) with her 7-5, 6-2 straight sets win over Joselyn Treyes Albarracin of USF (2-6) at #3-singles. Culibrk at #5 and Kobayashi at #6 also posted straight-set singles wins for the Spartans.

"Overall, our depth in singles helped us out. Again, Marine Dans at #3 was phenomenal, light out -- how she competes and goes about her business on the tennis court has been a very pleasant surprise," says San Jose State University women's tennis coach Chad Skorupka about the team's home opener at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club. "She did it again against a quality opponent and clinched the match for us."

San Jose State earned the first point of the match sweeping the first two completed doubles contests. Culibrk and Kobayashi defeated Amber Del Rosario and Alisha Sharma of USF, 6-1. Dans teamed with Gaelle Rey for a 6-2 decision over USF's Treyes Albarracin and Hannah Borjeson.

The Spartans' fifth point in the win came at #1-singles. Sybille Gauvain, ranked #56 nationally in the February 22 Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, defeated Emily Maxfield, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0. Gauvain won the tiebreaker, 7-4.

"Sybille got off to a slow start, found a way to get that second set, went up 4-1 in the match tiebreaker and to close it off," according to the Spartans' head coach.

Weather-permitting, San Jose State has a busy weekend on the road. The Spartans take on CSUN (Cal State Northridge) on February 25 and UC Irvine on February 26.
