Feb. 25, 2017

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - Dezz Ramos scored 27 points, 20 in the second half, but the San Jose State women's basketball team got down early and could never get back into it in a Mountain West contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans (10-18, 7-9 MW) made just five of 20 shots in the first period (25 percent), but a Jasmine Smith layup with 1:50 to go in the quarter had SJSU within two points 13-11. Boise State closed the quarter on a 4-0 run which it extended 2:30 into the second quarter with six more points to lead to 23-11.

A Rachol West free throw ended the Bronco streak, but Boise State outscored the Spartans 8-2 over the next four minutes to push its advantage to 17 points, its biggest of the game. They still led by 17 with 1:29 to go before intermission, but back-to-back three-pointers by Ramos and Paris Baird made it an 11-point deficit, 38-27, going into the break.

SJSU cut the lead to eight points twice in the third quarter, but Boise State (20-7, 10-6 MW) answered each time. Shalen Shaw's 26 points and nine rebounds paced the Broncos. Marijke Vanderschaaf scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds and Yaiza Rodriguez chipped in 16 points and dished out a game high seven assists.

Trailing 59-42 heading to the fourth quarter, Ramos drained a three followed by a three from West and it looked like SJSU was on the comeback trail. However, from that point on Shaw and Rodriguez scored the next 10 points for Boise, and answering each SJSU bucket and kept the Spartans at bay for the eight-point victory.

In addition to her 27 points, Ramos had five assists and five rebounds. Baird finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. Jasmine Smith seeing her first action in two games, scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds.

The Spartans head to Reno, Nev., for their next game. They play the University of Nevada on Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m.
