Men's Golf Finish 12th at National Invitational Tournament

Final Results

Tucson, Ariz.--- The San José State University men's golf team finished in 12th place at the National Invitational Tournament with a three round total score of 13-over par 877. This is the Spartans' best team finish at the par-72, 7,200 yard OMNI Tucson National Golf Course. In the final round, the Spartans shot their best score with a two under-par 286.

"Were getting close to the breakthrough. We just got to stay in it, but we are making progress," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.

Kevin Velo came out firing in round three posting six birdies for a score of three-under par 69. He finished the tournament with a total score of one-under par 215, and tied for 26th. Since returning from the offseason break, Velo has played four of his six rounds at even-par or better.

"The work in the offseason was beneficial," said Kennaday "Kevin is taking his game to the next level."

Scott Munger tied for 41st, and shot even par in round three to give himself a three round total of three-over par 219.

Matthew Murray shot five-over par in round three, and tied for 53rd with a score of seven-over par 223.

William Barnett went low for the Spartans in round three carding a four under par 68. He improved each day in the tournament to finish tied for 57th with a score of eight-over par 224.

Sean Talmadge recorded an eagle in round three, and finished the tournament tied for 77th at 13-over par 229.

Competing individually, and not contributing toward the team score was Matthew Ashley who had a 20-over par 236and tied for 86th.

The National Invitational Tournament featured a 16-team field that included: San José State, Arizona State, Iowa State, UNLV, Arizona, Texas El Paso, Brigham Young, San Francisco, Colorado State, Notre Dame, Santa Clara, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico State, Princeton, and Nevada.

Winning the tournament was Iowa State at 32-under par, and a total score of 832.

On the players' leaderboard, Chun An Yu from Arizona State won the tournament with a round-three score of eight-under par 64. He had a total score of 17-under par 199 over three rounds.

The Spartans return to action on 3/12 to compete at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Oregon.
