San Jose, Calif. - With a jumper midway through the fourth quarter, senior Dezz Ramos became the 16th player in San Jose State women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, but a nearly six-minute scoring drought to open the third quarter, in which the New Mexico Lobos recorded 22-straight points, proved to be the Spartans undoing in an 82-72 loss on Saturday afternoon in The Event Center.
SJSU (7-15, 4-6 MW) built a 45-40 lead after the first 20 minutes, behind the play of Jasmine Smith and Paris Baird who both recorded double doubles in the game. Baird had 10 points and nine rebounds and Smith 14 points and seven boards through two quarters as the Spartans forced New Mexico (13-10, 8-4 MW) to play at their pace. San Jose State controlled the boards 28-to-15 and outshot the Lobos 44 percent to 41 percent in the first two periods.
Smith who gave up five inches to UNM's Richelle van der Keijl in the post, finished with 24 points, on 10-of-17 shooting, and grabbed 13 rebounds. Baird was pitted against Kianna Keller who goes 6-4 at a forward position, but finished with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Ramos reached 1,000-points in her 51st game as a Spartan, which eclipses Hall of Famer Lora Alexander, who did it in 55 games. "It's nice to reach a milestone like this and be recognized, " Ramos said after the game, "but everyone on this team is here to win and it would have been nice to have accomplished this in a winning effort."
All the Spartans' good work in the first half went out the window in the third quarter. Each team took 19 shots, but New Mexico knocked down 11 compared to SJSU's four. In New Mexico's 22-point burst, Mykiel Burleson recorded 11 points and a five points deficit turned into a 17-point lead for the Lobos. UNM lead by a game-high 20 points with 1:14 to go in the quarter, before San Jose State ended on a 7-2 run to close the gap to 69-54.
Once New Mexico got the double-digit lead, they slowed the game down, worked the clock and finished with the 82-72 win.
Van der Keijl finished with a game-high 31 points and also grabbed 13 rebounds. Cherise Beynon added 18 and Burleson had 13 for New Mexico.
Despite the loss the Spartans dominated the boards 55-to-40, its biggest rebounding advantage of the season.
The Spartans get back to action on Wednesday in San Diego against the San Diego State Aztecs. Tip off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
