Women's Tennis Heads To UC Santa Barbara & Cal Poly

Feb. 8, 2017

Seeking to play its first matches in nearly three weeks, the San Jose State University women's tennis team has scheduled non-conference contests at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly on February 11 and 12.

The Spartans (1-1) opened the dual-match portion of their season in Florida splitting matches with Florida Atlantic, a 4-3 win, and Florida International, a 6-1 loss on January 24. Matches the weekend of February 4 at Santa Clara and the University of San Francisco were postponed due to wet grounds.

San Jose State faces a UC Santa Barbara squad (0-4) in a February 11 match with a first serve at 10:00 a.m. Arguably, the unranked Gauchos played one of the toughest schedules nationally the first three weeks of the season losing to #12-Texas Tech, #20-UCLA, #21-South Carolina and #22-Southern California (USC).

UCSB is led by Palina Dubevets ranked #80 in the February 8 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) national rankings. Dubevets and teammate Stefani Stojic are ranked #52 nationally in doubles.

San Jose State's number-one singles player Sybille Gauvain is ranked #93 nationally. Gauvain has a 10-4 record in singles this season.

Cal Poly (0-2) also is seeking its first dual match win of the season at the Spartans' expense. The Mustangs are unranked in the ITA's top-25 and do not have a nationally ranked singles player nor doubles pair.

Neither the UC Santa Barbara nor Cal Poly match will be available live on the internet.

NOTES: The San Jose State-Santa Clara match is rescheduled to February 18, 11:00 a.m. at Santa Clara. The home-opening match with USF at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club in San Jose is rescheduled to February 23, 1:00 p.m.

Seniors Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey can move closer to the San Jose State all-time mark for total singles and doubles victories. Klocker is in fourth place with 124 wins after winning one singles and one doubles match against Florida Atlantic. Rey has 121 heading into the UC Santa Barbara match. The school record for career wins is 132 by Sebastiani Leon Chao during the 2011 through 2014 seasons.
