Beach Volleyball Opens 2017 Season This Week

The 2017 San José State Beach Volleyball team begins the season with two matches over the next few days. The team plays at the University of the Pacific on Thursday at Raney Courts beginning at 3 p.m., and then against San Francisco on Saturday in Santa Cruz beginning at 10 a.m. The Spartans will also play an exhibition match against Feather River College on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Pacific finished the 2016 season with a 6-9 overall record and defeated the Spartans, 4-1, in the team's only meeting. Live scoring is available at http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=169523.

San Francisco finished 2016 with a 16-5 overall record and won two matches over the Spartans, 3-2 at the Stanford Tournament, and 3-1 at the USF Invitational.

The Spartans finished the 2016 season with a 9-11 record with two wins over California and a win over Stanford. Four players return from last year's team who had .500 or better records - Nandyala Gama (7-7), Jamie Hirai (11-9), Allison Meehan (11-9) and Julie Sam (11-9).

The 2017 season is the second year of sponsorship by the NCAA. The second championship will take place May 5-7, in Gulf Shores, Ala.
