Sybille Gauvain Named Mountain West Women's Tennis Player Of The Week

March 1, 2017

Colorado Springs, Colo.----- Sybille Gauvain, San Jose State University's nationally-ranked women's tennis player, was named the Mountain West's Player of the Week for her performance in matches from February 21 through February 28.

Ranked #56 in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), Gauvain went undefeated winning a pair of singles and one doubles contests as the Spartans defeated the University of San Francisco, 5-2, and CSUN (Cal State Northridge), 4-1. Both of her singles wins were in straight sets as she raised her season record to a team-best 13-6.

"Sybille is playing with a lot of confidence at the #1-position," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka about the three-time All-Mountain West and the first Spartan to be a Mountain West women's tennis Player of the Week award winner since joining the conference in 2013.

"It's (the award) a great accomplishment for her and the team. It's the first time in a long time, we've had a Player of the Week. Sybille knows she's going to be challenged every time she steps out on the court representing San Jose State at #1. We've told her about it and reinforced it with her.

"She's risen to the challenge and is playing very good tennis right now."

Since the dual match season started in late January, Gauvain teams with senior Marie Klocker at the #1 doubles position. They are 8-5 for the season and winners of their last four completed doubles matches. Their biggest win of the season was on February 14 in a 6-0 win over Stanford's Emily Arbuthnott and Taylor Davidson, ranked #21 nationally in the preseason.

San Jose State (4-3) returns to action, Friday, March 3, hosting Saint Mary's in a 1:30 p.m. match at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club in San Jose and concludes the weekend with a March 4 non-conference match vs. Portland, also at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club starting at 1:30 p.m.
