Fayetteville, Ark.-- San José State freshman Taylor Chan anchored the floor and vault teams for the Spartans in a tri-meet at Arkansas with Centenary Friday night. The Spartans placed second with a 193.875 team score.
Chan tied for first on the floor with a 9.900, her second consecutive week with a 9.900 or higher score and her fifth consecutive floor title. She also led the Spartan vault team with a 9.800 to place fourth, behind a three-way tie for first place.
The Spartans started the night on bars with a 48.375. Kaitlin Won led the team with a 9.750, followed by Haleigh Shepard, Kaprece Nadonza and Stephanie Relova at 9.675, Rachel Heinl at 9.600 and Kendal Watts at 8.250.
Moving to beam, San José State had to count a fall in its 48.025 and had a 96.400 after two rotations. Won again led the team with a 9.750, followed by Relova at 9.725, Alisa Bogdan and Michelle Shalit at 9.700, Chelsey Andrada at 9.150 and Chan at 9.025.
Chan highlighted the Spartan floor team in the third rotation as she scored a 9.900, and the team had a 48.875. Andrada and Ellie Pascoe-Long each had a 9.775, while Josalyn Ray added a 9.750, Erica Matos at 9.675 and Madison Loomis at 9.650. The Spartans headed to the final rotation with a 145.275.
On vault for the final rotation, San José State scored a 48.600, led by Chan's 9.800. Matos and Nadonza had a 9.725, then Ray at 9.700, Heinl at 9.650 and Shepard at 9.150. San José State finished the meet with a 193.857 and second to Arkansas who had a 196.150.
The Spartans return to The Event Center next Saturday, March 18, to host the MPSF Women's Gymnastics Championships beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Spartan Ticket Office at (408) 924-SJTX (7589).
