Women's Tennis Defeats Santa Clara, 5-2

March 12, 2017

Santa Clara, Calif.----- Miyo Kobayashi and Tamara Culibrk combined to win a doubles match and each won in singles as San Jose State University defeated Santa Clara University, 5-2, in a non-conference women's tennis match.

It was a team win in every sense for the Spartans (6-4), winners of two dual matches in a row. San Jose State did not need its #1-doubles team of Sybille Gauvain and Marie Klocker to win their match. Yet it was singles triumphs by Klocker and Gauvain that closed it out for the Spartans.

Playing at #3-doubles, Culibrk and Kobayashi dispatched Santa Clara's Elizabeth Stephens and Zeina El Tawil, 6-2. The Spartans (6-4) won the doubles point for a 1-0 lead when Marine Dans and Gaelle Rey topped Nabila Farah and Caitlyn Frankel of the Broncos, 6-4.

Kobayashi gave San Jose State a 2-0 lead with her 6-0, 6-4 straight set win over Giannina Ong, at #6 singles.

Marie Klocker and Sybille Gauvain of the Spartans, at #2 and #1 singles, respectively, were the next two to post wins clinching the win for San Jose State. Klocker tied the school record for career wins at 132 with her 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Danielle Silva. Gauvain, ranked #72-nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings, defeated Madison Clarke, 6-4, 7-5, to give the Spartans the team win.

"My (singles) score was very tight. I was trying to stay positive," said Gauvain who improved her singles win-loss record to 15-7. "My serve was not bad. It helped me on some points. When I was trying to go to the net, it was working better than staying in the back."

Culibrk was the Spartans' other singles winner with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9 tiebreaker) victory over El Tawil at #4.

"Concentrating at some key moments in some of those (singles) sets, especially with Marie Klocker in the first set and Sybille (Gauvain) being down 5-4 in the second set (won the match). Her (Gauvain) winning the second set and getting that magic number `four' to win the match was huge today," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka.

San Jose State looks to make it three consecutive dual match victories, Thursday, March 16, when it hosts Illinois State in a non-conference match at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club. First serve is at 1:30 p.m. (PT).
