FULLERTON, Calif. -- The San Jose State University baseball team concluded its four game, six day road trip with a 6-1 loss to the #7-nationally ranked Cal State Fullerton Titans in a non-conference matchup.
The Spartans lost their fourth game in a row, dropping all their games on the road trip, and are now 6-9 on the season. The Titans won their tenth game of the season against five losses.
Cal State Fullerton did its damage up at the top the lineup with the first through fourth hitters accounting for six of the seven hits and scoring five of the six runs.
The Titans jumped on Spartans starter Cameron Keup in the first inning when cleanup hitter Taylor Bryant hit a two-run homer. The two-runs were all the Titans needed as three Titans pitchers combined to allow only five Spartan base hits, three walks and a run.
Cal State Fullerton starter Joe Wills threw five innings of shutout ball, scattering three hits, walking three and striking out five to pick up his second win of the season (2-0). Erik Cha picked up a three-inning save for his first save of the season. For the Spartans, Keup is now 1-2 on the season.
SJSU junior Shane Timmons (2-for-4, RBI) was the only Spartan with multiple hits. Freshman Kellen Strahm legged an infield hit in the first inning to extend his hit streak to 12 in a nongames.
San Jose State returns to action on Friday, March 17 in a Mountain West conference game versus Nevada. First pitch at the Municipal Stadium is at 7:00 p.m. PT.
