Fairfax, Va.----- San Jose State University football wide receiver Tim Crawley, a 2016 graduate, recently received two more prestigious national scholar-athlete honors from Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.
Crawley was named the Arthur Ashe. Jr., Sports Scholar Team winner for football and one of 20 male semifinalists for the overall Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar Award.
Since 1992, the higher education publication that specializes in reporting on minority, ethnic and racial issues has honored outstanding student-athletes of color through its Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholars awards program.
Besides athletics ability, award winners must maintain a 3.20 or higher cumulative grade-point average, have sophomore, junior, senior or graduate standing and be active in campus and/or community activities.
This year, more than 1,200 student-athletes will be named an Arthur Ashe, Jr. (1943-1993), Sports Scholar, in honor of the first black male to win U.S. Open and Wimbledon tennis championships and an active supporter of civil rights.
"Once again, we are so proud to announce that Tim Crawley is receiving these very noteworthy accolades from the Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar Awards program. He has distinguished himself academically, athletically and in the San Jose State and San Jose communities," says San Jose State Interim Director of Athletics Marie Tuite.
"I've had the honor to spend time with Tim and his family and he simply embodies the ideal student-athlete. On top of that, he is an outstanding young man."
This is the third consecutive year Crawley is an Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar and his second as a national semifinalist for the top male scholar-athlete in all sports according to Diverse.
During the 2016-17 academic year, Crawley was named a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy for college football's top student-athlete and a National Football Foundation winner of an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District VIII selection in football for the second time and an Academic All-Mountain West selection in football for the fourth consecutive season.
Crawley majored in business management information systems and graduated magna cum laude in May 2016. He finished his San Jose State football career, #5 on the school's list for career receptions with 151.
Crawley participated in numerous team, campus and community activities with boys and girls and adults as a San Jose State University student.
In the 2015 and 2016, San Jose State University student-athletes received 36 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Awards -- the most by any college or university in the Pacific Time Zone. San Jose State women's gymnast Shanice Howard was the national winner for female student-athletes in all sports in 2011.
The complete list of this year's award winners in 37 male and female sports covering NCAA Divisions I, II and III, the NAIA and two-year community colleges will be published in the magazine's April 6 edition.
