San Jose, Calif.----- The middle and bottom of San Jose State University's lineup was dominant in a 4-0 non-conference women's tennis victory over Illinois State at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club.
The Spartans (7-4) won the #2 and #3 doubles matches to take a 1-0 and captured three straight-set singles matches in the #4 through #6 positions for their third consecutive team victory.
San Jose State did not need any points from its top two players - #72 nationally-ranked singles player Sybille Gauvain and Marie Klocker playing #2 singles and as Gauvain's doubles partner at #1 doubles.
"We have a lot of depth. I've been saying it all year with our three seniors. Obviously, you can see the results at #4, #5 and #6 (singles). Any team we play up high, they're going to be strong. We saw that with the #1 and #2 double scores," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka whose team had seven set victories by scores of either 6-0 or 6-1.
"When we are playing `clinch singles' and with the depth we have, that's what is going to happen."
The Spartans changed up their singles lineup against the Redbirds (5-9). Miyo Kobayashi moved up from #6 to #5 switching with Gaelle Rey. Kobayashi topped Valerija Gercar, 6-0, 6-1, to go 2-0 on the season at #5 singles.
The switch paid off well particularly for Rey who ended a six-match losing streak in dual match singles. She defeated Andrea Beneroso, 6-1, 6-1 in her most one-sided singles win of the season and moved into fourth place on the San Jose State career wins list with 129. Rey passed Chau Truong who had 128 wins in her Spartan career.
"We gave it everything in doubles, because the doubles point was very important. Then, in singles, we won as a team," said Marine Dans, who teamed with Rey for a 6-4 doubles win over Jana Kustkova & Gabriela Sprague.
San Jose State's next opponent is Cal State Fullerton in a non-conference dual match, Friday, March 24, at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club beginning at noon.
