In San Jose State University's final regular season non-conference match, the #14-ranked Spartans host #20-ranked Harvard University, Friday, March 17, at the West Valley Aquatics Center beginning at 6:00 p.m.
San Jose State (8-13) seeks its second two-match winning streak of the season. Last weekend, the Spartans wrapped play at the Aztec Invitational with a 9-7 win.
With the exception of a 24-2 loss to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) opponent UCLA, ranked #3 nationally, San Jose State is playing much better on the defensive end. Outside of UCLA, no team put up 10 or more goals. Long Beach State, Indiana and Wagner scored five or fewer times in its matches against the Spartans.
During the March 11 & 12, Aztec Invitational, the Spartans yielded a goal during 3-of-31 opponent power play opportunities. The team's inflated goals against average (GAA) finally is under 10 goals a game at 9.89.
San Jose State has two players, sophomore Carla Toha Vilanova and senior Donia Momen with 25 or more goals for the season. Toha Vilanova is the team leader with 32 and Momen has 25. Momen had a nine-match scoring streak stopped in the 9-7 win over Whittier at the Aztec Invitational.
Harvard (7-8) is the midst of a seven-match swing through Northern California while avoiding a New England snowstorm. The Crimson has wins over Sonoma State (13-10) and Fresno Pacific (14-4). Kristen Hong, a sophomore from Orinda, Calif., leads the team with 27 scores. Sofia Carrera-Justiz is next with 20.
San Jose State alum Ted Minnis from the Class of 2005 is Harvard's head coach. Nine of the Crimson's 13 players are from California.
There is no admission charge. Parking on the West Valley College grounds is $3.00/vehicle.
