SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose State University baseball team pulled to a .500 record in Mountain West conference play with a 7-6 win over Nevada on Saturday at Municipal Stadium.
By winning the first two games of the three-game series, the Spartans now carry a 4-4 record in conference games. It is the best Mountain West conference start for SJSU since joining the conference for the 2014 baseball season. Overall, the Spartans are 8-9 on the season while the Wolf Pack are 5-14 (2-6 MW).
SJSU got off to a fast start scoring five runs in the opening frame and kept the five-run margin until almost losing it in the ninth.
In the ninth, Nevada scored four runs on two hits, a walk and two errors to get within one run before SJSU reliever Hilario Tovar closed the door on the comeback.
Tovar picked up his first save of the year when he was brought in with runners at first and second and no out, up 7-5 in the ninth. Nevada's Chase Grant laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over to second and third. Tovar got Keaton Smith to ground out to third, allowing the third base runner, Jed Sprague, to score. With the tying run in scoring position at second, Tovar got pinch hitter Kaleb Foster to ground out to the pitcher to close out the game.
Matt Brown picked up his second win of the season going 5.0 innings and giving up two runs.
The Spartans jumped on Nevada starter Mark Nowaczewski in the first, scoring five runs on three hits, two walks and a Wolf Pack error. The big hit of the inning came on Jack Veasey's double that drove in two-runs to cap off the inning. Nowaczewski took the loss (1-2).
Freshman Kellen Strahm picked up two more hits to extend his hit streak to 14-games. He is now hitting .379 on the season.
San Jose State will look to sweep the series on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT.
