SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose State University baseball team beat Nevada 6-5 in walk-off fashion to sweep the series on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. It was the Spartans' first series sweep since 2012 when SJSU swept Fresno State.
SJSU is now 5-4 in Mountain West conference play and 9-9 overall while Nevada dropped to 5-15 (2-7 MW).
The 6-5 win was SJSU's third consecutive one-run win of the series but unlike the first two games, the Spartans had to make a comeback, doing so twice in the final three innings.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, trailing 4-3, junior Chris Williams (3-for-5, 2 R, RBI) blasted a solo home run over the right field fence off Nevada pitcher Grant Ford to tie the game up 4-4. It was Williams' second home run of the season.
And in the bottom of the 10th, again trailing by one run, junior Josh Nashed (2-for-4, R, RBI) hit a solo shot against Nevada's closer Evan McMahan to lead off the inning. It was Nashed's first home run of the season.
Williams followed with a single for his third hit of the game and was pinch run by Corey Olivet. Following a Nevada error and an intentional walk to Aaron Pleschner (3-for-4, R, RBI) to load the bases, McMahan got Kellen Strahm (1-for-5) to foul out for the second out of the inning.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Shane Timmons (1-for-5, RBI) came to the plate. McMahan uncorked a pitch that went all the way to the backstop, allowing Olivet to score from third on a walk-off wild pitch.
It was the Spartans' second extra inning walk-off win of the series and the third consecutive extra inning win this season.
Hilario Tovar (1-1) picked up the win for the Spartans. Tovar had a hand in two of the three wins over the weekend series, getting a save on Saturday. McMahan (1-4) took the loss for the Wolf Pack.
Spartans starter Graham Gomez went 4 2/3 innings striking out a career-high eight batters.
Strahm had a single in the fourth inning to extend his hit streak to 15 games.
SJSU plays its next game on Tuesday, March 21 against Pacific in Stockton. First pitch is 6:00 p.m. PT.
