Stockton, Calif. - The University of the Pacific's Bill Simoni Field had been very kind to pitcher Katelyn Linford and the San José State softball team this year, the staff ace and team had a 3-0 record at the park this season, but on Sunday the Nevada Wolf Pack got timely hits to defeat the Spartans 6-2.
Linford (13-3) lost for the first time in eight outings giving up eight hits and five runs in 6.0 innings.
Thing started going wrong in the top of the first. Nevada (15-12, 1-2 MW) got back-to-back one-out singles followed by a homer to left field for a 3-0 lead.
The score remained 3-0 until the fifth when Nevada got a one-out home run to left to make it 4-0 and in the top of the sixth they tacked on an addition run. With two outs and a runner on second, the Wolf Pack batter hit a towering popup to third base. Both Emma Entzminger and Georgia Blair, the SJSU third baseman and shortstop, lost it in the sun. With the runner going, the ball fell between the fielders and the run scored making it 5-0.
The Spartans (19-10, 2-1 MW) finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Blair and Cassidy Clark both singled to open the frame and moved to second and third on an infield ground out. Chelsea Jenner then singled to right scoring Blair and advancing Clark to third. Entzminger then laid down a sac bunt, which scored Clark. The Spartans had hope down 5-2 after six complete.
In the top of the seventh, Colette Riggs, on in relief of Linford, had runners on second and third with one out and gave up a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.
The Spartans had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but as was the order of the day they couldn't bring the runs home. For the game SJSU stranded 10 runners to Nevada's three.
McKenna Isenberg (8-6) earned the win for the Wolf Pack with a complete game seven hitter.
