#10-San Jose State Hosts #3-UCLA In MPSF Women's Water Polo Opener

March 2, 2017

Following its best weekend of the season, the San Jose State University women's water polo team opens Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play hosting UCLA on Saturday, March 4, 1:00 p.m. at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif.

At last weekend's Barbara Kalbus Invitational, the Spartans (6-10, 0-0 MPSF) defeated two nationally-ranked teams, #15-Long Beach State, 6-5, and #9-UC Santa Barbara, 9-7 in overtime, to finish 10th in the 16-team tournament. The win over UC Santa Barbara was San Jose State's first over a top-10 ranked this season and vaulted the team to #10 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's national coaches weekly poll. The Spartans are 1-7 against top-10 ranked teams at the time of the match.

In its four matches at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, San Jose State allowed an average of 7.75 goals per match, its best four-match stretch of defense this season. The Spartans will be tested severely at both ends of the pool against #-ranked UCLA (11-1, 0-0 MPSF). The Bruins opened the season with a 20-1 victory over San Jose State at the LouStrong Invitational.

UCLA has three of the top-10 scorers in the MPSF and averages 15.33 goals per match -- second best in the conference. Freshman Maddie Musselman is tied for fourth in goals per match at 2.33; Alys Williams, sixth at 2.17; and Rachel Fattal, ninth at 2.08. Carla Toha Vilanova is the Spartans' top scorer at 1.85 per match and ranks 13th in the MPSF.
