Stockton, Calif.- The 2017 San José State beach volleyball team started the season with a 4-1 victory at Pacific Thursday afternoon on Raney Courts in Stockton.
The Spartans started the dual with victories at the #4 and #5 positions. Summer Avery and Kaitlynn Zdroik started the winning with a 21-19, 21-9 sweep, followed by Giulia Gávio and Jamie Hirai with a 21-19, 21-15 win.
At the #3 spot, Julia Golbeck and Luiza Andrade played two close sets before falling 21-16, 21-17.
Nandyala Gama and Julie Sam teamed up in the #2 position and needed three sets to win 21-18, 21-23, 15-11, while Allison Meehan and Lyndi Scholl teamed up for a 21-19, 21-13 win at the top spot.
"We had a really nice team victory today to start off our season," said Spartan head coach Aaron Shepardson. "Pacific pushed us in every match. I was very proud to see us maintain our competitive posture through many of these moments."
San José State opens a season 1-0 for the first time in school history. The team plays against San Francisco this Saturday in Santa Cruz at 10 a.m. The Spartans also play an exhibition against Feather River College at 1 p.m.
