Three Gymnasts Headed to NCAA Seattle Regional

March 20, 2017

Indianapolis, Ind.-Three San José State University women's gymnasts, Kaitlin Won, Rachel Heinl and Taylor Chan, will compete at the 2017 NCAA Seattle Regional on Saturday, April 1, at 4 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, Wash.

Won will compete in the all-around at a regional for the second time in three seasons after qualifying with a 38.865 regional qualifying score. She also participated in the all-around at the 2015 NCAA Berkeley Regional. This season, Won competed in the all-around in nine meets and scored a career-best 39.225 to win the all-around in a home meet with UC Davis. She will rotate with Utah State during the meet and start with a bye, followed by bars-beam-bye-floor-vault.

Heinl qualified with a 9.810 RQS on bars, and this is her first appearance at a regional as a specialist. She scored a 9.800 or better on bars in six meets, including a 9.800 at the MPSF Championships this past Saturday to tie for eighth place. She will compete on bars in the fourth rotation with BYU.

Chan is the top qualifier on floor with a 9.880 RQS, and makes her first appearance at an NCAA Regional. She tied for first on floor at the MPSF Championships with a 9.875, and has won or shared six consecutive floor titles coming into the meet. Chan scored a season-best 9.925 in a home meet against Utah State. The 2017 MPSF Freshman of the Year will compete on floor in the first rotation with BYU. Chan is also the alternate on beam, and she tied the school record on beam at the MPSF Championships with a 9.900.

The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in St. Louis, Missouri, April 14-15, hosted by the University of Missouri, Columbia and the St. Louis Sports Commission. The top two teams from the Champaign, Fayetteville and Seattle regionals will compete in one of the semifinals, and the top two teams from the Gainesville, Lincoln and Morgantown regionals will compete in the other semifinal.

In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
