HONOLULU - San Jose State's rally in the ninth inning fell short as the Spartans lost their second consecutive one-run game in the series against Hawaii on Saturday night.
In front of 3,697 raucous fans at Les Murakami Stadium on the campus of the University of Hawaii, the Spartans scored two runs in the ninth and had the game tying runner 90 feet from home. But pinch-hitter Kyle Blakeman, who had three RBIs on Friday, grounded to third to close out the game, giving the Rainbow Warriors a 5-4 win.
The Spartans lost its fourth consecutive game to drop their record to 9-13. Meanwhile, the 'Bows won its fourth consecutive game to move to 14-8.
Down 5-2 in the ninth, the Spartans got singles from Chris Williams (1-for-3, R), David Campbell (1-for-4, R, RBI), Josh Nashed (2-for-4, RBI) and Shane Timmons (2-for-4) to score two runs and make it a one run game.
With runners in the corners and two outs, Hawaii brought in reliever Dylan Thomas who induced Blakeman to a ground ball out for the final out of the game.
SJSU starter Matt Brown pitched into the seventh inning, having allowed just two hits and issuing four walks through the first six frames. However, the righthander got into trouble in the seventh inning when he gave up an RBI double to Hawaii's Dylan Vchulek putting the 'Bows up 3-2.
Brown was pulled out after loading the bases with no outs. By the time the Spartans' trio of relievers Zach Tanner, Zach Wallace and Hilario Tovar were done for the inning, Hawaii had put up three runs to take a 5-2 lead.
Hawaii took advantage of Brown's six walks and a hit batter, scoring their five runs on just four hits. Three players that were walked came into score. Brown took the loss to go to 2-3 on the season.
The 'Bows starter Dominic DeMiero meanwhile did not allow any walks, scattering five hits and two runs in 8.0 innings to earn his fourth win of the season against one loss. Thomas got his second save of the season.
