Women's Golf Tied For Second After First Round Of Anuenue Spring Break Classic

Kapalua, Hawaii-- The San José State women's golf team started Spring Break off in Maui with a five-over 293 in the first round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic on The Bay Course in Kapalua, Hawaii. The Spartans are tied for second with Colorado and just two shots behind leader UCLA.

Three Spartans finished the day in the top-20. My Leander and Abegail Arevalo each shot an even-par 72 and are tied for fourth place. They are five shots behind the leader, Lilia Vu of UCLA who shot a five-under 67.

Leader started her day on #12 and made five pars and two birdies to start her first seven holes at two-under par. On holes #1-9, she was two-over par with two bogeys and seven pars made. Leander finished the round with five consecutive pars made (#7-11).

Arevalo started her day with a bogey on the par-four #13, but then proceeded to make pars on 16 of the next 17 holes. Her only birdie came on the par-five, 471-yard sixth hole. She leads the tournament with her 16 pars made in the round.

Elizabeth Schultz is tied for 16th after shooting a two-over 74. She started her day on the par-five #15 with a birdie, but followed that with a double-bogey on #16 to go to +1 through two holes. She made pars on her next five holes before going birdie-par-birdie on #4-6 to get back to one-under par. After a par on #7, Schultz made bogeys on three of her next four holes before finishing the round with three straight pars.

Franziska Friedrich is tied for 23rd at three-over 75, while Alexandra Cooper is tied for 43rd at six-over 78. Friedrich made two birdies and 11 pars during her round, while Cooper had three birdies and eight pars.

The Spartans made the second-highest number of pars on the day with 60, and the third highest number of birdies at 11.

"We had a good overall performance by everyone today," said San José State head coach John Dormann. "The conditions, wind, speed and grain of the greens make this course a challenge. We need to improve our short games over the next couple of days."

Second round action begins Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m. HT/10:45 a.m. PT. The Spartans begin the round on holes 1-5 with UCLA, Colorado and Arizona State.
