Women's Golf & Leander Finish Third At Anuenue Spring Break Classic

Kapalua, Hawaii-- With a final round 292, the San José State women's golf team wrapped up three solid days by finishing third with an 877 at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at The Bay Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Senior My Leander finished third at the tournament with a four-under 212. She shot a two-under 70 in the final round, her 14th under-par round of the year. Leander continued her strong play this spring with her fourth top-five finish in as many tournaments and her seventh on the season. Starting the tournament as the 35th-ranked player in the country by Golfstat, Leander finished ahead of seven other players ranked in the top-50.

During her third round, Leander started the day making birdies on her first two holes, followed by five pars before a bogey on #8 and a par in #9 to finish her front nine at one-under par. She played her final nine holes similarly to her first nine holes, with a bogey (#12), two birdies (#15 & 18) and six pars.

Abegail Arevalo recorded her second top-10 finish this spring as she tied for 10th at two-over 218. She shot a 73 in the final round with three birdies and 11 pars. Arevalo and Leander led the tournament field in pars made as each player made 40 over the three rounds.

Franziska Friedrich shot her third consecutive 75 and finished tied for 25th at 225. She made three birdies during the final round and made one birdie and five pars over her final six holes played.

Alexandra Cooper tied for 27th as she shot a 74 for the second consecutive round and finished at 226. She also made four birdies during the final round. Elizabeth Schultz finished tied for 60th at 237 after shooting an 82 on Wednesday.

The Spartans showed that they can compete with the top teams in the country this week. The team entered the tournament ranked at #42, and finished behind #7 UCLA and #4 Arizona State in the team standings. The Spartans were seven shots better than #33 Colorado and 10 shots better than #1 Stanford.

"We completed three very solid and consistent rounds at this tournament," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "Dana (Dormann) and I are very proud of the team. They showed that they can compete with some of the better teams on the West Coast.

"I thought our ability to bounce back after a few mistakes was excellent this week. We are hopeful that we can keep this going."

The Spartans play next at the Silverado Showdown, April 9-11, at the Silverado Resort and Country Club.
