San Jose, Calif. - The Wyoming Cowgirls shot 63 percent in the in the second half and pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the San Jose State women's basketball team 68-59 on SJSU's senior night.
Four Spartans, Dezz Ramos, Paris Baird, Jasmine Smith and Rachol West played their final game on Walt McPherson Court and scored 47 of the team's 59 points on the night.
Dezz Ramos scored a game-high 22 and added three assists. Jasmine Smith had 12 points and five rebounds. Paris Baird added eight points and eight rebounds and Rachol West scored five points and dished out two assists.
The game was a seesaw battle throughout the first 30 minutes, which saw eight lead changes and neither team able to establish more than a seven-point advantage. Wyoming (21-8, 13-5 MW) led by five after the first quarter, but the Spartans battled back and took the lead on a West three-pointer with 7:00 minutes to go before the half.
San Jose State (10-20, 7-11 MW), which hit 8-of-17 in the second quarter, built its biggest lead, six points, on a pair of Ramos free throws with 1:21 to go before intermission and took a 34-30 lead in to the locker room.
The Cowgirls' Natalie Baker, one of five Wyoming players in double figures, hit a jumper with 1:49 left in the third, giving the visitors their first lead of the second half, 46-44. After trading buckets, Ramos hit a three from just past half court as time expired in the period to put SJSU back in front 49-48.
Wyoming tied the game up and took a lead they would not relinquish two minutes into the fourth quarter. The Spartans were getting the ball in good spots, but just couldn't hit the shots. The Cowgirls made the most of their opportunities, hitting 7-of-11 in the quarter as well as 6-of-11 from the line to earn the nine-point victory.
The Spartans are the eighth seed in next week's Mountain West Tournament and will play San Diego State on Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas.
