Spartans Split First Four At San Diego Classic

San Diego, Calif. - The San Jose State softball team, playing five times in the San Diego Classic II this weekend, split its first four games on Friday and Saturday and will play one more on Sunday at the San Diego.

McNEESE STATE 15, SAN JOSE STATE 11 (8)

The Spartans banged out a season-high 16 hits, came back from an 8-2 deficit to send the game to extra innings and held an 11-8 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, but McNeese State scored seven runs, including a game winning grand slam, to send SJSU to a 15-11 defeat. Seven Spartans had two-hit games, with Kristen Heffley (2-for-4, 3RBI) driving in a team-leading three runs. Brittany Abacherli (1-of-4, 2R, 2RBI, HR) and Alexander Luna (1-of-4, 2RBI) each had two RBI.

The Spartans used all four pitchers that were brought on the trip. Kacie Grasenz (0-3) pitched the last two-thirds of an inning and took the loss.

SAN JOSE STATE 6, BOSTON U. 5

The Spartans scored six runs in the first two innings and held on for a 6-5 victory over Boston U.

Brittany Abacherli (2-for-4, 2R, 2RBI, HR), Georgia Blair (2-for-3) and Cassidy Clark (2-for-3, 2RBI) had multi-hit games. In the first, Abacherli hit her second home run in as many games, a solo shot, and Clark drove in two more with a single. In the second, Abacherli drove her second run on a single; Madison Aurin (1-for-2, R, RBI) plated another on a sacrifice fly and Abacherli scored on a throwing error.

In the third, Boston scored two unearned runs off Kacie Grasenz who pitched four innings in earning the first win of her collegiate career. Katelyn Linford picked up a save, her second of the year, but made it interesting in the seventh. She gave up three runs and allowed the game-tying run to get into scoring position before inducing a groundout to end the game.

SAN JOSE STATE 9, DETROIT MERCY 4

The Spartans gave up a run in the first, tied it in the fourth and blew the game open in the fifth en route to a 9-4 victory over Detroit Mercy.

Madison Aurin (3-for-3, R. RBI) drove in the tying run in the fourth. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Kristen Heffley (1-for-4, R, 4RBI, HR) hammered a one-out offering for the first grand slam of her career. Later in the inning, Georgia Blair (2-for-3, R, 3RBI, HR) blasted a three-run homer making it 9-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Colette Riggs (2-2) got the first batter, but the next two singled and she was lifted for Katelyn Linford. Linford gave up a walk and a single, but a throwing error by Blair allowed two unearned runs to score to make it 9-4. Linford gave up a meaningless hit in the seventh to secure the win for Riggs.

MIAMI (OHIO) 14, SAN JOSE STATE 4 (6)

Miami scored in each of the games six innings and cruised to a 14-4 win.

Kacie Grasenz (1-4) gave up a solo homer in the top of the first and Casey Watt (1-for-1, 2R, RBI, HR) homered in the bottom of the frame to tie the game 1-1, but from there it was all Miami. Grasenz allowed two more in the second and was lifted in favor of Emily Rogers to start the third. Rogers surrendered a pair of homers and four runs in the third. Grasenz came back in the fourth and gave up two in that inning and two more in the fifth to make it an 11-1 lead for Miami.

In the sixth the Spartans got a bases loaded walk and Chelsea Jenner (1-for-1, 2RBI) singled in two more runs to make it 11-4, but Miami ended the game with three runs in the bottom of the frame for the 14-4 win.
