San Jose, Calif.----- San Jose State University won five out of six singles matches en route to a 5-2 win over the University of Portland in a non-conference women's tennis match at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club.
The win over the Pilots was nearly a complete opposite from a 4-2 non-conference loss to Saint Mary's the day before when the Spartans (5-4) won the doubles point and only one singles match.
Despite Sybille Gauvain and Marie Klocker extending their doubles winning streak to six with a 6-2 victory over Jelena Lukic & Jelena Lazarevic, San Jose State went into the six singles matches trailing 1-0.
"We lost the doubles point, which was a surpise. We were out of synch and I wasn't happy," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka. "The team came out focused (in singles) and it showed winning five out of six (in singles)."
Miyo Kobayashi, Klocker and Marine Dans won their singles matches in straight sets at #6, #2 and #3, respectively, to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
Klocker's singles win gave her 131 combined singles and doubles victories at San Jose State moving her into a second-place tie with former teammate and first-year assistant coach Julianna Bacelar. Klocker is one win shy of tying Sebastian Leon Chao for the school record for women's tennis wins at 132.
Tamara Culibrk clinched the match for San Jose State with her win over Portland's Emily Soares, 6-4, 6-4.
San Jose State's next match is Sunday, March 12, at Santa Clara. After two rainouts, the two schools are trying for the third time to play their match. First serve in doubles is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
