San Jose, Calif.-- On senior day, the San José State women's gymnastics team scored the second-highest team score of the year and were victorious over Utah State, 195.150-194.025, Sunday afternoon at The Event Center.

Sunday marked senior day for Rachel Heinl, Erica Matos and Haleigh Shepard. All three vaulted for the Spartans, Heinl and Shepard competed on bars, and Matos counted on floor for SJSU.

However, it was the freshman Taylor Chan who stole the show on the day with wins on beam and floor. She tied her career high on beam with a 9.850 and set a new best on floor with a 9.925.

The Spartans and Aggies were close through the first three rotations. SJSU started the day on vault with a 48.700, led by Chan with a 9.800 to finish second. Shepard was third with a 9.775, followed by Kaprece Nadonza and Matos at 9.725, Heinl at 9.675, and Josalyn Ray at 9.650. Utah State scored a 48.950 on bars to take a .250 lead.

In the second rotation, San José State used a strong bars rotation to take a 97.600-97.400 lead. The team scored a 48.900 on bars, led by Stephanie Relova tying her career-high at 9.825. Heinl had a 9.800, followed by Kaitlin Won at 9.775, Kendal Watts at 9.775, Shepard at 9.725 and Nadonza at 9.575.

The lead switched back to Utah State after the third rotation, 146.475-146.350. The Aggies scored a 49.075 on floor, while the Spartans had a 48.750 on beam. Chan won the event with a 9.850, and Relova and Michelle Shalit tied for third at 9.800. Chelsey Andrada followed with a 9.775, then Ray at 9.525 and Alisa Bogdan at 9.425.

San José State then used a 48.800 on floor on the final rotation, and Utah State had to count two falls on beam as the Spartans won the meet 195.150-194.025. Chan led all performers with the score of the day of 9.925 on floor. Madison Loomis scored a season-best 9.825, followed by Ellie Pascoe Long at 9.800, Ray at 9.675, Matos at 9.575 and Andrada at 8.950.

The Spartans travel to Arkansas this Friday, March 10, for a meet with the Razorback and Centenary beginning at 7 p.m. CT.
