Box Score

Play-by-PlaySAN DIEGO - The San Jose State University baseball team out hit San Diego State 9-8, but lost to the Aztecs 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Through the first three innings, Spartans starter Matt Brown kept the San Diego State lineup in check, allowing just one hit, to hold a 2-0 lead.

However, things unraveled in the fourth inning with two hit batters and a walk to load the bases. The Aztecs got three consecutive singles off Brown coupled with a throwing error by third baseman David Campbell to score five runs in the inning.

Five runs is all that was needed by Aztecs starter Dominic Purpura. The lefty senior went the distance, giving up three runs, one earned, while scattering nine hits and a walk. Purpura improved to 5-0 on the season while Brown fell to 2-4.

With the win, the Aztecs extended its second-place lead in the Mountain West to three games over the Spartans. San Diego State is now 8-3 in conference and 18-9 overall, while San Jose State dropped to 5-6 in conference and 10-16 overall.

Chris Williams and Campbell had two-hits each for the Spartans, including the only two extra base hits of the game. Campbell also collected an RBI and scored two runs.

Freshman Jakob Gonzalez finished the game pitching 1 1/3 inning and struck out a season-high three batters.
