Napa, Calif.--Shooting a one-under 287 in the second round, the San José State women's golf team jumped into the top-10 at the Silverado Showdown. The Spartans are tied for ninth with Oregon at 589 after two rounds on the Silverado Resort and Spa North Course.
The Spartans made the biggest move up the team standings, jumping up five places, and are tied with host Oregon at 13-over par. Starting the second round in 14th-place, the team made 15 birdies and 60 pars to shoot up the leaderboard. Stanford continues to lead the team competition at 17-under par after shooting a 12-under 276 in the second round. UCLA is second at 12-under par, while Colorado is third at one-over, 577.
Individually, Alexandra Cooper shot the best round of her Spartan career with a three-under 69 and is tied for 22nd at one-over par, 145. Starting on #10, she made birdies on the par-three, 138-yard #11 and par-four, 336-yard #17 and seven pars to go two-under through her first nine holes. On #11, she hit an 8-iron to 10 feet for her birdie putt.
After pars on holes 1-5, Cooper made back-to-back birdies on #6 and #7, a par on #8 to be at four-under before a bogey on her final hole left her at 69 for the day. She was one of just three players in the tournament field to birdie the sixth hole and one of seven players to record a birdie on the seventh hole.
"We have been working with Alex on her confidence," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "She hit the ball really well today and made some nice saves during this round. On hole three, she hit into the trees and then into the rough, about 135 yards from the hole. Alex then hit a cut seven-iron to get within a foot of the hole to save her par. I am really happy with her 69."
My Leander is tied for 22nd with Cooper at one-over, 145. Leander shot an even-par 72 on Monday, and made four birdies during her round and five consecutive pars at one point (#18, 1-4).
Franziska Friedrich and Abegail Arevalo each shot a 73 in the second round. Friedrich is tied for 42nd at 149, while Arevalo is tied for 48th at 150. Each player made three birdies during her round.
Elizabeth Schultz had a solid second round with a 74 and tied for 68th at 153. Her only birdie came on #18, but she finished her round with eight consecutive pars and 14 for the round.
"We are more familiar with the course today," said Dormann. "This is a championship course that just takes time to become familiar with, especially the speed and slope of the greens. We had a nice, solid round of golf today."
The Spartans begin the final round on Tuesday with an 8 a.m., shotgun start. The team will begin on holes 9, 10, 11 and 12. Fans can follow live scoring at http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=10916.
