SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State University baseball team lost to Stanford 9-3 on a windy night at Municipal Stadium, snapping its eight-game unbeaten streak at home.
The Spartans are now 12-18-1 overall on the season while the Cardinal improved to 18-10.
The Spartans fell early to the Cardinal, giving up five runs in the second inning and could not recover.
In the second, Stanford scored five runs against SJSU starter Jaiden France, who was making his first start as a Spartan, and Graham Gomez on three hits, two hit batsmen, a walk and a sacrifice fly.
France was charged with four of the runs and took the loss (1-2).
SJSU used a total of 10 pitchers, second most of the season, with Gomez pitching the most innings with 2 1/3. Jackson Cunningham, who pitched the sixth inning, and Jakob Gonzalez who pitched the eighth were each charged with two runs apiece. For Gonzalez, they were the first runs give up by the freshman this season.
Offensively, the Spartans collected eight hits, including three by Aaron Pleschner. It was the sophomore's fifth three-hit game of the season to raise his season average to .345, taking over the team batting average lead from Shane Timmons (.328).
Timmons went hitless on the evening but drew a walk to extend his streak of reaching base to 19 games.
Pleschner had the only extra base hit for the Spartans, a double in the seventh with the bases loaded to drive in two runs.
Jack Veasey was the only other Spartan with multiple hits with two.
San José State travels to Reno to play the University of Nevada on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (April 13 - 15). The two teams played a series earlier in the season (March 17-19) where the Spartans swept the Wolf Pack at Municipal Stadium.
