Napa, Calif.-- San José State shot a two-over 290 in the final round of the Silverado Showdown and finished tied for ninth with Pepperdine at 879 (+15) for the three-round tournament at the Silverado Resort and Spa.
In a field that featured 10 top-50 nationally-ranked teams, San José State finished ahead of three teams that are ranked higher. The Spartans started the final round very strongly, beginning on holes 9, 10, 11 and 12. The team made nine birdies and 29 pars on the back-nine holes of the course but just four on the front nine holes of the North Course. For the tournament, San José State led the field in par-three scoring at five-under par and made the third-highest number of pars with 175.
My Leander was the team's top finisher as she tied for 19th place at one-over par 217. She shot an even-par 72 in the final round, making three birdies and 12 pars. Beginning on #9, Leander went par-birdie then three consecutive pars before a bogey on #14, followed by two birdies and two pars through #18. Over her last eight holes, she made six pars and two bogeys.
Alexandra Cooper finished tied for 26th at 219, and shot a 74 in the final round. She started the day on #10 and made a birdie followed by seven consecutive pars and a bogey to shoot even par over her first nine holes. The front nine posed some challenges for Cooper as she made a double bogey on #1, followed by a birdie on #2 and a bogey on #3. After three pars, she finished the round birdie-par-bogey.
Franziska Friedrich shot the low Spartan score in the final round with a one-under 71 and finished tied for 34th at 220. She also started the day on #10 and went birdie-par-birdie. After three consecutive pars, she finished the round bogey-par-par. Friedrich then played the front nine at even par with seven pars, a birdie on #4 and a bogey on #5.
Abegail Arevalo shot her second consecutive 73 in the final round and finished the tournament tied for 46th at 223. Starting her day on #11, she went par-bogey-par-birdie-birdie over her first five holes. Arevalo then made seven consecutive pars before finishing bogey-par-birdie-par-bogey-bogey.
Elizabeth Schultz rounded out the Spartan lineup as she tied for 64th at 229, and finished the tournament with a 76. She made 13 pars and a birdie during the round, starting the day on #12 with a par followed by a birdie. Schultz also made six consecutive pars during her round (18-5).
"This tournament, everyone played good solid rounds after the first round," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We played great on the par 3s and have to do better on the par-5 holes. We are feeling good about the overall status of the team heading into the conference tournament next week."
The Spartans travel to Rancho Mirage, Calif., next week for the 2017 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course. The teams will play 18 holes on April 17, 18 and 19.
