Beach Volleyball Finishes 2017 Season This Week

The San José State beach volleyball team plays three opponents this week in the final week of competition for 2017.

The Spartans play against Santa Clara on Thursday, April 13, at 3 p.m., at Los Gatos High School. The Broncos are 0-9 heading into their match with San Francisco on Wednesday, April 12. This will be the first meeting this season between the two teams, and Santa Clara is 3-1 all-time against SJSU.

The team then travels up Interstate 80 to play two duals on Saturday, April 15, at the Livermore Community Park in Folsom, Calif. The Spartans face Cal Poly at 10 a.m. (first meeting this season), followed by Sacramento State at 1 p.m. The Spartans and Hornets faced off on March 11, with Sacramento State winning 3-2.

San José State enters this week with a 6-8 overall record and upset then-#18 California 3-2, this past Saturday.  With the Spartan success, the team was listed as also receiving votes in this week’s AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Poll.

These are also the final matches for graduates Allison Meehan and Julie Sam.  Meehan is partnered with Lyndi Scholl this season in the number-one position and have a 7-7 record.  Over her three years, Meehan played with Scholl (2017) and Jamie Hirai (2015 & 2016).

Sam has partnered with Nandyala Gama this season in the number-two position, and they have a 5-8 record. She also played one match this year with Julia Golbeck. Over her three years, Sam played with Gama (2016 & 2017), Golbeck (2016 &2017), Summer Avery (2015), Sara Hibbs (2015) Breann Robinson (2015) and Samantha Pereira (2015).

Sam also has the distinction, with Hibbs, of winning the first beach volleyball match in school history with a three-set win on March 7, 2015.
