Davis, Calif.----- Sybille Gauvain, Marie Klocker and Miyo Kobayashi each were part of a winning doubles pair and won a singles match leading the San Jose State University women's tennis team to a 4-1 non-conference victory over UC Davis.
The win for the Spartans (10-5) was their sixth win in their last seven matches. UC Davis (14-9) only has one win in its last five matches.
Gauvain and Klocker teamed at #1 doubles for San Jose State and earned the doubles point for the Spartans and a 1-0 lead in the team scoring after a 6-4 win over Kristy Jorgensen and Nikita Pradeep. Kobayashi and her partner, Tamara Culbirk, got things started for San Jose State with their 6-3 win over Samantha Martino and Kamila Kecki at #3 doubles.
Klocker at #2 and Gauvain at #1 were straight-set winners in singles to give San Jose State a 3-0 lead. After Culibrk lost to Nikita Pradeep, 6-2, 6-2 at #4 singles, Kobayashi made it seven singles wins in a row defeating Jessie Lee, 6-2, 6-3 for the match. Kobayashi remains undefeated at #5 singles with a 6-0 win-loss record.
"It was a great team win. We played solid today. We were solid in singles," said San Jose State assistant coach Julianna Bacelar. "We have three more matches before the conference championship and there are a few things that we need to improve on to play our best tennis in two weeks (at the Mountain West championships)."
The Spartans conclude their weekend road trip at Nevada, Sunday, April 16, in an 11:00 a.m. Mountain West conference dual match.
