Rancho Mirage, Calif.-- San José State women's golfer My Leander continued her strong play this season with her 15th under-par round of the year as she shot a two-under 70 in the first round of the 2017 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship. The Spartans finished the first round in fifth place at 297.
Leander is in third place with her two-under 70. She was one of six players to shoot under par in the first round. Manon Molle of New Mexico leads the field at four-under 68, followed by Harley Dubsky of UNLV at three-under 69.
Teeing off at 7:36 a.m. on Monday, Leander had one of her best rounds of the season, shooting one-under par over the first nine holes. She birdied the par-three #5 (only player in the field to do so), and made four consecutive pars on the four previous and the five following holes.
Leander birdied the par-five #11 and the par-four #15, making pars on six of her seven other holes on the back-nine, her only bogey coming on the par-five #18 to end the round.
Abegail Arevalo is tied for 17th at two-over 74. Over her first nine holes, she made seven pars and two bogeys. Arevalo started the back-nine holes by going bogey-par-birdie. She was just one of three players in the field to make a birdie on the par-four #12. She then went par-bogey-birdie before finishing with three consecutive pars.
Alexandra Cooper is 29th at four-over 76. She made birdies on the par-five #2 and the par-four #6, and was one over after her first nine holes. Cooper ran into a little problem on holes 12-14 as she went bogey-double bogey-bogey, but ended the round with three pars and a birdie on the par-four #16. She was the only player in the field to make a birdie on #16, which played as the hardest hole in round one.
Elizabeth Schultz is tied for 30th at five-over 77. She was two-over after her first nine holes with bogeys on #1 and #5 and seven pars. Over her final nine holes, she made five pars, two bogeys, a double bogey and a birdie on #18.
Franziska Friedrich rounded out the Spartan scoring with a nine-over 81 to tie for 40th. Her only birdie of the day came on the par-five #9, and she made eight pars during her round.
San Jose State made 10 birdies and 55 pars during the first round. The Spartans are 10 shots behind three teams tied for first at one-under par - San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico.
