Rancho Mirage, Calif.--San José State women's golfers My Leander and Abegail Arevalo finished second and third respectively at the 2017 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship at the Dinah Short Tournament Couse at the Mission Hills Country Club. The Spartans finished in third place at 876.
Leander shot an even-par 72 in the final round to finish second at four-under par 212, the best finish by any Spartan player at the MW Championship. For her round, she made 16 pars, one birdie on the par-five #12 and a bogey on the par-four #15. Leander led the tournament in pars made with 44.
Arevalo tied her best career round with a four-under 68 and finished third at three-under 213. Ironically, her other round of 68 came in the final round of the 2016 MW Championship. Today, Arevalo started with an eagle on the par-four #1 as she hit a six-iron from 155 yards in the rough. The ball found the green, bounced and rolled in the cup. She also birdied the par-four #4 to finish her opening nine holes at three-under par. Over her final nine holes, she made birdies on #11 and #14, six pars and a bogey on #13.
San José State shot the low round of the day with a one-over 289 to finish in third place, five shots behind second-place San Diego State and eight shots behind repeat-champion UNLV. The Spartans made eight birdies, an eagle and 65 pars on Wednesday.
Franziska Friedrich and Elizabeth Schultz tied for 23rd place at 229. Friedrich shot a 74 for the second consecutive day and moved up seven places on the leaderboard. She made three birdies on the day and shot even par over her final nine holes (one birdie, one bogey, seven pars). Schultz shot a 77 in the final round, making 12 pars and seven bogeys during her round.
Alexandra Cooper tied for 30th at 232. She started the round on Wednesday with six consecutive pars, a birdie on #7 and two more pars to go one-under through nine. Over her final nine holes, she made five pars and four bogeys for a 75, her best score of the tournament.
"We started the round really hot today and somewhat stalled out on the last five holes," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We played pretty good over the last two rounds, but we have to start and end tournaments better. The wind kicked up at the beginning of our round, which helped us, but when the wind slowed down, it hurt us towards the end of the round.
"My and Abegail were solid today. My had a little harder time controlling her irons today which did not give her as many birdie opportunities. She fought hard to shoot even on the day. Abegail was phenomenal. She hit the ball great all week, and today she understood the greens better, and her putting was much better."
The Spartans now await word about selection to the NCAA Regionals. The Golf Channel will air the selection show live on Thursday, April 27, from 8-9 a.m. Pacific time.
