San Jose State University women's tennis seniors Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey each won a singles and doubles match leading the Spartans to a 4-3 victory over UNLV in a Mountain West conference contest.
The win for San Jose State (9-4) is its fifth in a row and is the program's longest winning streak since capturing six in a row near the end of the 2015 season.
"... I'm happy for the team, most importantly, today after this match versus UNLV," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka about defeating the 2016 Mountain West champion.
"We set the tone with the doubles. We can play really good doubles. What was important was continuing it in the singles."
Klocker teamed with Sybille Gauvain for a 7-5 win over Aiwen Zhu and En-Pei Huang at #1-doubles and Rey partnered with Marine Dans for another 7-5 triumph over Carol Zi Yang and Cristina Moroi at #2-doubles giving San Jose State a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans raced to a 3-0 lead with straight-set singles wins by Klocker at #2 and Miyo Kobayashi at #5.
"I was consistent today and not making unforced errors. I was able to finish points earlier," said Kobayashi, who upped her singles record to 16-9 with her fifth straight victory.
Rey then clinched the win for the Spartans with a 1-6, 6-4 and 6-2 victory over Jovana Kenic at #6-singles. The two wins for Rey gave her 133 for her career and moved her into second place on the San Jose State list for career victories behind Klocker who upped her school-record total to 135.
UNLV won the remaining three singles matches, each in three sets, to close out the match. Carol Zi-Yang, ranked #27-nationally, topped San Jose State's Sybille Gauvain, ranked #74, with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 triumph in the final match of the day.
The Spartans put their winning streak on the line when they head to Nevada for a Friday, April 7, dual match.
