San Jose, Calif.— Fernanda Vido, a 5-10 outside hitter from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, will join the San José State University volleyball program beginning with the 2017 season, as announced by Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson.
Vido comes to San José State after playing the 2015 season at Eastern Washington. She earned accolade at both the club and national level in Brazil. She played on Brazil's junior national team in 2012. Three times, Vido was named the Copa Minas Brazil Most Valuable Player and was awarded top hitter honors at Taca Paraná, the highest-level volleyball tournament in her country.
Playing sports is in her family's blood. Both of her parents competed in Olympic Games. Father Marcelo was a two-time Olympic basketball standout for Brazil (1980 & 1984), while her mother Luiza competed with the Brazilian volleyball team at the 1984 Olympics. Two of her older sisters earned Division I scholarships - Clara, volleyball, at Louisiana Tech; and Julia, women's swimming, at Old Dominion.
"San José State University offers and excellent academic and athletic program in the best area of the country," said Vido. "The volleyball team has a lot of young players and a caring and dedicated staff. The competitiveness of the team and the passion that players and coaches show is something that I fell in love with. Having the opportunity to play for SJSU and become part of the Spartan family is an honor to me. I cannot wait to represent the school colors in the Mountain West."
"Fernanda is a stable competitor. She will raise the level in our gym with pure attitude alone. What is even better is her skill can match that intensity. We are looking forward to competing with her on the floor this fall," said Shepardson.
