Fresno, Calif. - In the first two games of the series, San Jose State and Fresno State took turns jumping out to big first inning leads and never looking back, splitting the two games. The script remained the same on Sunday but the Spartans came out on the short end, losing 16-8.
Fresno State (22-21, 11-10 MW) sent 11 batters to the plate in the opening frame against Spartan starter Joseph Balfour, scoring five runs on four hits, three walks and a wild pitch. The Bulldogs scored in all but three innings, collecting 19 hits on the day.
The Spartans (15-26-1, 8-14-1 MW) did not get their first hit of the game until the fourth when freshman Johnny Mendoza (2-for-3, R, RBI) tripled to the right center gap. Mendoza was the lone Spartan with multiple hits on the day, hitting a single in the seventh.
SJSU scored eight runs on just five hits thanks in due to 15 free passes issued by the Bulldogs staff including a school record eight hit batsmen.
Four of the five San Jose State hits were extra base hits. In the eighth, Chris Williams (1-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Shane Timmons (1-for-4, 2 R, RBI) hit back-to-back home runs.
Balfour took the loss for the Spartans dropping his record to 0-3. Ryan Jensen (3-0) picked up the win for the Bulldogs.
Josh Zanger was the last of the seven pitchers utilized by the Spartans as he was the lone Spartan that did not allow a run. Zanger allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings of work.
The Spartans next play at Stanford on Tuesday, May 2. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PT.
