San Jose State Turns In Strong APR Scores Across The Board

May 10, 2017

Indianapolis, Ind.----- To emphasize and reiterate the gains by the San Jose State University student-athlete population using the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Academic Progress Rate (APR) measurement, a department-record 12 Spartan intercollegiate athletics programs reported multi-year scores of 980 or higher (out of 1,000).

The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention for student-athletes receiving athletically-related financial assistance. The highest possible score is 1,000 and a 930 score projects to approximately a 50 percent Graduation Success Rate according to NCAA data experts.

On May 3, the San Jose State men's cross country, women's basketball, women's golf, gymnastics, and women's water polo teams were recognized as recipients of the NCAA Public Recognition Award for a multi-year APR score in the top-10 percent of teams sponsoring the specific sport. These five Spartan teams, a department record, had APR scores of 1,000.

Women's swimming (990), women's cross country (988), volleyball (983), women's soccer (982), softball (981) and women's indoor and outdoor track and field (980) all posted scores of 980 or higher.

Men's golf (967), football (958), baseball (956), women's tennis and men's soccer (948 each), men's water polo (947), and men's basketball (934) are the other programs with reported multi-year scores. For the sixth consecutive year, the San Jose State football program had the best multi-year APR score among California State University (CSU) system schools that play in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). This year's multi-year APR scores include the last four years (2013-16) of available data.

Men's basketball, men's cross country, women's basketball, women's golf, gymnastics, softball, women's soccer and women's water polo were nine teams credited with single-year APR scores of 1,000 in 2016.

"We are proud of our overall APR achievements and accomplishments. We set department records in three areas this year -- number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards, number of teams with multi-year scores of at least 980 and number teams with single-year scores of 1,000," says Marie Tuite, San José State's interim director of athletics. "Today's report is a validation that we continue attracting and recruiting student-athletes that can succeed academically and in competition. We have an excellent academic support system of faculty members, advisors, tutors and counselors for our student-athletes to get a first-rate college education and graduate from San Jose State University."
