SAN FRANCISCO - Under clear skies on a Friday matinee game, San Jose State University baseball team lost to the University of San Francisco, 15-0, in a non-conference matchup at Benedetti Diamond.
The Spartans are now 16-32-1 on the season and the Dons improved to 25-26.
USF scored two runs in the first and never looked back. The Dons took advantage of two walks issued by Spartan starter Matt Brown to start the game and were doubled in by USF cleanup hitter Dominic Miroglio.
For the game, the Spartan pitching staff walked 10 batters compared to just one for USF.
Leading 4-0 in the fourth, the Dons broke open the game sending 15 batters to the plate to score nine runs on seven hits, two walks and two hit batsmen.
SJSU got four hits on the game including two by Josh Nashed (2-for-3, 2B). Aaron Pleschner (1-for-3) and Kyle Morrison (1-for-1) who played for the first time since April 21 were the only other Spartan with hits.
Brown took the loss for the Spartans and is now 4-6. USF starter Thomas Ponticelli pitched 8.0 innings of shutout ball to pick up his fourth win of the season against one loss.
With the game out of hand 15-0 in the eighth, Jack Veasey who usually catches for the Spartans took the mound. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out a batter in his one inning of work. Infielder Michael Breen pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out a pair of USF hitters.
Game two of the series at Benedetti Diamond on the campus of the University of San Francisco will be played on Saturday, May 13 at 1:00 p.m.
