Colorado Springs, Colo.--Current San José State volleyball players Nandyala Gama and Breann Robinson are two of the 12 players selected to comprise an all-star women's volleyball team that the Mountain West is sending to Europe in July. Leading the trip will be San Diego State head coach Deitre Collins-Parker.
Twelve Mountain West student-athletes make up the team that will travel to Maribor, Slovenia, for several days of training sessions and friendly matches against national teams from the region. From July 10-15, the team will compete in the 2017 European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia, featuring junior national and club teams from throughout Europe. Bring It Promotions, under the ownership of Tim Kelly, is managing the Mountain West all-star trip and has been running the Global Challenge tournament for 13 years. BIP has been coordinating overseas University tours since 1997. The last three Mountain West squads have each placed third in the Brijuni Division at the Global Challenge.
Gama was an honorable mention All-MW selection in 2016 and led the Spartans in blocking with 137, 1.23 per set. She recorded the second-highest season block assists total in San José State history with 128. Her 137 total blocks are tied for the sixth-best single-season total. With one season remaining, Gama is currently 10th on the San Jose State career block assists list with 241.
Robinson averaged 8.55 assists per set in 30 matches played. She recorded a career-best 63 assists this past season against Southern Utah and became the ninth player in school history to record 63 assists in a match.
They are the fourth and fifth Spartans to represent San José State in Europe. Other players included Hanah Blume, Tyanna Roy and Luiza Andrade.
The Mountain West all-star team includes two setters, one libero, three middle blockers and six outside/opposite hitters from nine of the 11 MW member institutions.
