Berkeley, Calif.----- San Jose State University's championship women's tennis season ended when host University of California posted a 4-0 dual match victory in the first round of the NCAA Division I Championships.
Though the Spartans (14-8) got off to good starts in each of the three doubles matches, the #13-ranked Golden Bears (18-5) established their superiority and won every finished set in the six completed matches. The only match stopped with San Jose State ahead was at #3-doubles with Tamara Culibrk and Miyo Koabyashi ahead of Denis Starr and Stephane Lin, 4-3.
"We got off to a real good start in doubles, serving 2-0 at #1 (Sybille Gauvain and Marie Klocker). Unfortunately, we weren't able to capitalize. The momentum changed and obviously we lost the doubles point," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka. "Going into singles again, we were very competitive in certain positions. We weren't able to hold that momentum. Cal played a very aggressive style coming up to the net. It just wasn't our day in singles.
"They (Cal) played well, and we made them earn the victory."
With a 1-0 lead after doubles, the Golden Bears #1-singles player Maegan Manasse, ranked #34 nationally, kept Cal in control with a 6-3, 6-2 win over #81-ranked Sybille Gauvain. Cal's Maria Smith, at #6-singles, and Olivia Hauger, at #4-singles followed suit shortly after that with straight-set wins over senior Gaelle Rey and freshman Tamara Culibrk, respectively, and San Jose State's season was over.
"This experience was just amazing, winning the conference, coming to the NCAA's. We're all super close -- team bonding. We all loved each other...," said Klocker after her final San Jose State match.
The NCAA Tournament match marked the final contest for seniors Marine Dans, Rey and Klocker. Rey finished her career #2 on the San Jose State all-time wins list with 137, two behind Klocker.
